Textured Work
"Rags to Riches"
Clay and paint go hand in hand. Primarily being a ceramicist, I often work with many kinds of textures. I frequently use my hands to create my ceramic work. Texture is usually identified with physical touch, and that is what I want to convey with my paintings.
The tactile quality of paint allows me to manipulate my work several times before I decide on the finishing point. As I continuously layer and subtract my paint to create depth and texture. I do this with much intention in every move I make to get closer to the final destination. My work heavily relies on process-based responses. As I add one color or stoke, it informs my next move in the painting. This allows me to be considerably expressive within my Craft without fear of making a mistake.
These pieces mimic the order within the chaos. I can easily compare these works to my everyday life. As things are chaotic and messy all around me, the paint is the one thing I can control. If you were to pick the painting apart, you would conclude that the pieces don’t work together very well and are true pandemonium. However, when they are all put together, they create something beautiful and enticing.
